No obligation, and no answer dressed up: if it cannot be found, we say so.
There is no Pétrus 1946 in the cellar at present. Bottles like this change hands privately, a few at a time, and rarely through a list.
Bordeaux in 1946.
A small crop from a vineyard still recovering from the war, picked by a workforce that had not yet come home. Very little was made and less survives. A bottle from 1946 is bought for what it is rather than for what the year promised.
Eleven hectares of blue clay on the Pomerol plateau, farmed by the Moueix family and made almost entirely from Merlot. Pétrus never had a château to speak of; it had the soil, and the soil made it the most sought-after wine in Bordeaux.
If you are looking for one, write with the format and the condition you would accept. The network that assembled this cellar is sometimes able to find another bottle; if it cannot, you will be told so plainly rather than offered something else. Our note on fill levels explains what to ask about an older bottle before anything is agreed.
